In the old way of setting up and managing IT, all of the servers are located within the company. These servers require engineering time on a regular basis to keep them working. This model is expensive to maintain and a company managing its own servers incurs a lot of risk. Is everything backed up? Can the data be restored if a disaster occurs? Is virus and SPAM protection up to date and working? Every issue is yours to pay someone to resolve.

In the old model resources are required to maintain your own servers. And the more problems you have the more it costs you. So your incentive is do as little as possible to your servers so you can reduce your costs. But this results in your having more problems in the future.

Your servers are a lot like a car. If you do not have them serviced or maintained on a regular basis you will have more significant problems in the future.
