Should we upgrade to Vista?
There is an old IT consulting expression that goes something like this: “You know who the pioneers are because they have all the arrows in their back.”
If you don’t mind being a Vista pioneer and dealing with some arrows in your back, and you have some compelling reasons to move to Vista than you might want to do it. In general, you should wait until the 2nd half of 2008 before moving to Vista. By then all major applications should be Vista compatible and Microsoft will have probably worked most of the serious bugs out.
When you do upgrade to Vista, it is important to create a migration plan that anticipates the problems you will encounter, how to address those problems, how long the upgrade process will take, and how much it will cost. Vista is a significant upgrade and moving to it should be treated as project.
